The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions by checking whether individuals have criminal records or are barred from working with vulnerable groups. It provides Basic, Standard and Enhanced checks, depending on the role. DBS supports safeguarding across the UK by ensuring only suitable people work in regulated activities.
Background
DBS trainers teach staff how to correctly process disclosure applications, verify identity documents and understand eligibility for different check levels. They guide learners through legal requirements, safeguarding principles and data‑handling standards. Trainers ensure people know how to spot errors, submit accurate information and interpret DBS results confidently and responsibly.
Need
DBS trainers need to strengthen virtual delivery skills, including managing online platforms, keeping learners engaged remotely and adapting activities for digital interaction. They must learn to use breakout rooms, polls and chat effectively, redesign face‑to‑face exercises for online formats and build confidence in presenting, troubleshooting and maintaining energy on camera.
Activity
We designed a two‑part virtual workshop by breaking the learning into short, high‑impact modules that build skills progressively. Part one focused on core virtual delivery techniques, while part two applied them to real DBS training scenarios. We used interaction every five minutes, varied media, purposeful pacing and clear structure to show how any virtual session can stay engaging, regardless of length.
Outcomes
Each particpant left the part 1 session with clear actions which they are going to deliver in the part 2 session.
