assertiveness training for business professionals

Assertiveness Training for Business Professionals

This assertiveness training for business professionals workshop looks at typical situations in law firms where some business services people do not show enough assertion. Typical examples of this can be when presenting ideas to senior lawyers, or clarifying the need for urgency from lawyers or colleagues. this workshop looks at the specific situations participants bring into the session and provides practical ideas and help on how to do things differently.

The workshop reviews what assertive behaviour looks like and how to develop the confidence to be more assertive. We also look at case studies where ITD have helped business services professionals to develop increased assertion with fantastic results.

Participants

We find this assertiveness training for business professionals can benefit just about any role from any department in a law firm.

Duration

The length of the session can vary according to how much depth you require. The workshop can be anything from a 90-minute workshop to a full day.

Agenda

Lawyers tend to be very bright, very articulate, quick thinking and often quite forceful. Business professionals tend to be helpful, accommodating and pleasant. Put the two together and it can work very well. But sometimes it can lead to the business professional people being overwhelmed by the lawyer and other more forceful colleagues.

Assertiveness is partly about standing up for ones self, as well as being helpful to the needs of the other person. It is important to recognise that being more assertive, can lead to a better, more realistic solution for the other party. The following agenda gives a menu which can be tailored to suit your needs.

  • Introduction & personal objectives.
  • Challenges with being assertive in a law firm – understanding the perspective of a partner, manager and those you’re working with.
  • Typical scenarios.
  • Clarifying assertive from aggressive.
  • How non assertive behaviour can lead to inefficiency.
  • Developing confidence.
  • Developing assertion in small steps.
  • Assertive words.
  • Neutral positioning.
  • Nudge in assertiveness.
  • Revisiting typical scenarios.
  • Summary & personal actions.
  • Behavioural change action plan.

Comprehensive and Engaging Training

July 25, 2025

I recently attended Martin’s ‘Working Effectively’ and ‘Professional Business Communication’ online training sessions and both were excellent. Martin is very engaging and ensures that participants all contribute to discussion. The sessions were very useful, drawing on real anecdotes and scenarios relevant to our level of work. I found both training sessions impactful and will carry the lessons learned into my work. Thanks Martin!

Working Effectively at Clifford Chance - Martin Chapman

July 25, 2025

I attended this session delivered by Martin and found it very insightful and engaging. Martin shared very realistic scenarios which required us to challenge how we would respond and the impact of different ways of saying things. A very interactive session and it was easy to remain engaged. I took away a lot from it

Personal Development Training (Negotiation Skills)

June 27, 2025

Martin is a fantastic trainer and easy to talk to. He makes the course easy to process and allows plenty of time to discuses anything you need clarifying. The course has been designed well and was adaptable to make it more relevant and personal to meet my target needs I was hoping to achieve.

I would recommend anyone to sign up for a course with Martin based of my personal experience and I look forward to working with him again within the future
