Tailored Assertiveness Training
Tailored assertiveness training builds confidence, clarity, and consistency in communication. It equips people to express expectations, challenge constructively, and handle difficult conversations with professionalism. By using real scenarios and role‑specific tools, teams become more decisive, collaborative, and effective, improving performance, relationships, and overall organisational impact.
Background
Kairos Power is an advanced nuclear engineering company developing next‑generation clean‑energy technology. At their Tennessee facility, teams such as site inspectors, engineers, and technical specialists operate in a high‑accountability environment where clarity, safety, and precision are essential. As the organisation continued to scale, leaders recognised the need to strengthen communication confidence across roles that interact with contractors, regulators, and cross‑functional teams.
ITD was invited to design and deliver a tailored assertiveness programme that aligned with the culture, expectations, and operational realities of a high‑integrity engineering environment.
Need
Kairos Power identified several specific challenges:
- Site inspectors needed to give clear, unambiguous direction to contractors and external partners.
- Technical staff often had to challenge assumptions or raise concerns assertively.
- Sometimes we can default to overly indirect communication, which risks delays or misunderstandings.
- Leaders wanted a shared language and toolkit for assertive, respectful communication that supported safety, quality, and collaboration.
The goal was not generic soft‑skills training, but a practical, behaviour‑focused programme that reflected the realities of a regulated engineering environmen
Activity
ITD designed a bespoke training solution built around the roles, scenarios, and communication pressures unique to Kairos Power.
Key elements included:
- Custom scenario design, using examples drawn directly from the Tennessee plant: contractor oversight, safety conversations, technical disagreements, and escalation moments.
- Tailored assertiveness scenarios that emphasised clarity, accountability, and psychological safety.
Training was delivered on‑site in Tennessee to maximise relevance and engagement
Outcomes
The programme aimed to deliver improvements across the participating teams:
- Increased confidence in giving clear, direct instructions to contractors.
- Stronger ability to challenge assumptions or raise concerns early, reducing risk and rework.
- A shared communication framework adopted across inspection and engineering teams.
- Greater consistency in how staff handled difficult conversations, and feedback.
