Law Firm Management Training

This case study describes how we delivered this law firm management training at Walkers LLP.

Walkers is a multi-jurisdictional offshore law firm headquartered in the Cayman Islands. Walkers provides legal, corporate, compliance and fiduciary services to global corporations, financial institutions, capital markets participants and investment fund managers.

Background

The London office is predominantly a business professional service office. The organisation has seen rapid growth over the past three years, due to success in providing specialist services to many clients including other law firms.

Need

The need was to provide management training for a mixed group, which included those who had been recently promoted as well as those who have been managers for some time. We were requested to provide practical ideas to help managers in their day-to-day work of managing teams of people.

The participants were from a range of functional areas including Marketing, IT, In-house legal, Compliance & Transformation.

Law Firm Management Training Activity

We designed a half day in-person session. The agenda was based on the participants’ needs which were gained through conversations with HR and direct emails from the target group.

The session was run as a workshop, with the agenda including:

  • Challenges in managing people.
  • Thinking as a Manager.
  • Motivating people in your team.
  • Management Styles.
  • Q&A.

The first part of the agenda, looking at challenges, resulted in a discussion about the different challenges faced. This extended to a discussion of possible solutions and the role of culture in even the smallest team.

The final session was a Q&A on any aspect of managing people, which included delegation skills, giving feedback and contracting.

The whole session was workshop in style with everyone engaged and involved throughout.

Outcomes

Everyone completed the session with specific actions to be implemented. Their questions were answered and they really enjoyed sharing challenges and ideas with their manager peers.

Participant Feedback

“I really enjoyed the course and this was helped by having Martin Chapman.

He was really engaged with us all and ensured we remained engaged throughout. I took a couple of points away from the course, that I will be working on over the next couple of months. It was very interesting listening to different management styles and experiences from the other delegates.

As the team were so engaged and we were clearly enjoying the course.”

Feedback gained shows this law firm management training was deemed a success.

Client Comment

“The feedback has been really positive, so I think we will be doing more of this.”
