
Virtual Management Training Case Study
Background
TMA is an environmental consultancy, providing innovative solutions with a practical approach in relation to trees, ecology and landscape. They have the know how to measure eco-services benefits; turning constraints into opportunities, increasing the value of a project, whilst helping to manage their clients’ duty of care.
Need
The need for training was for managers, who whilst highly qualified were new to the role of people management. Like anyone going into a new role they needed training on how to develop competence as people managers. People management can be one of the most challenging roles partly because we go from being measured based on our own performance, to being measured on the performance of others. The training had to give strategies, ideas and tips on how to practically manage people.
Activity
The proposal was to design and deliver a series of virtual training sessions via zoom. Each session was to be on a specific area of people management. The sessions would be separated by a number of weeks to allow reflection and practise.
The desired outcomes including:
- Improving participants’ confidence and skills in managing people.
- Preparing them for challenging situations.
- Gain ideas on how to effectively manage and motivate people.
The sessions covered a variety of subjects:
- Personality and the impact on managing.
- Coaching to encourage confidence.
- Dealing with conflict.
- Delegating successfully.
- Managing expectations.
- Motivating your team.
- Contracting conversations.
- One to ones.
- Development objectives.
Outcomes
Participants created actions from each session, which we reviewed in the following session.
In the last workshop the managers stated their key learning points. Each said how much they had gained from the training and what a difference it would make in their every day work.
