CRUK

Presentation Skills Training

Cancer Research UK is a cancer research and awareness charity in the United Kingdom and Isle of Man, formed on 4 February 2002 by the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.

Background

CRUK has many exceedingly talented people developing research. Communicating their research takes a specific set of skills, which is where this training helps.

Need

Whilst many researchers are confident about their work, this does not always translate into their ability to present their findings. The training was aimed to help develop their confidence in presenting to colleagues, funders and wider audiences.

Activity

We designed a programme which focussed on allowing time for each participant to practice their skills with coaching from the trainer.

The agenda covered the following key areas:

  • How to present complex data.
  • Engaging the audience.
  • Creating compeling slides.
  • Making clear points.
  • Creating a clear objective.
  • Using a simple structure.
  • Focussing on what you want the audience to do, learn or reflect on.
  • Developing a clear voice.
  • Using simple words to explain highly complex ideas.

Outcomes

The feedbacl from these session is always excellent. Each participant leaves with a clear set of actions, backed up by a number of videos of their performance to reflect on.
