Why is it important to stand relatively still when presenting? Some people are natural wanderers when making a presentation, they naturally walk from side to side, or forwards and backwards. Whilst being animated and passionate in our body language can be a good thing, we need to make a conscious decision about they messages we transmit.
When we wander about it can distract the audience’s attention from what we are saying. Rather than listening to us they are thinking, ‘Where is she going?’, or ‘Why does she keep wandering around?’ The last think we want to do is anything which might distract them from focussing and listening.
Wandering which talking can look good if we’re doing a piece to camera with an interesting backdrop, such as bit of jungle or busy high street. But when we are presenting in a typical business situation it is best to stand still and deliver our message whilst stationary.
